What is the Difference between Boilers and Water Heaters?

For most homeowners who aren’t skilled in the plumbing line, a boiler and a water hear may seem to have the same task. Both heat water throughout homes. Naturally, while the function of the two are the same, a boiler and water heater have separate purposes within a home and heat the water in different ways. It is important for homeowners to discover the differences between the two so they can save money and time troubleshooting these appliances when issues arise.

What is a Boiler?

Boilers don’t necessarily boil the water, but it turns the water into steam. Steam is a cost-effective way to carry heat. It is not only easy to pump throughout a house, but it holds heat better than just air. Boilers hear water up and turns it into steam, pushing it through the home to warm it up.

How does it Work?

Boilers are used to heat potable water. Except, when boilers are used as a heating system for a house, it depends on the thermostat to inform it when to begin heating the water in the system. Many boilers are on a closed loop system; this means they aren’t continually using new water when dispatching the steam throughout the home. Instead, it starts with water inside the boiler. Once the water becomes steam, the boiler sends the steam through the home and heats the walls.

What is a Water Heater?

Water heaters produce exactly what the name implies, it simply heats water. This water is used to wash your hands, cook, shower and clean. A water heater takes the cold water from the pipes and warms it up. Afterwards, it pumps it throughout the home and once the tap is opened.

How do they Work?

Water heaters with tanks take cold water coming in and indirectly warms it with electric heating rods or a gas burner. When the water has reached the correct temperature, the heater stores the water inside the tank – waiting for you to switch on the tap.

Tankless water heaters, on the other hand, heat water instantly instead of storing it. As water is switched on and the temperature is set, the tankless water heater heats the water as long as you have the water running.

What is the Difference between a Boiler and a Water Heater?
Water heaters heat the water that is used while cleaning, cooking and showering, whereas boilers are used to heat a house using the steam and heating technniques.
